This is the most complex visual presentation of the urban rhythm idea and its relationship to public space. This particular version consists of five different sequences of twenty images each. The images were made in Poland, Germany and China. Similar to the Barcelona series, these sequences require me to determine the scene and composition of the images. The scenes are composed around a changing messaging device which determines the timing of the sequences. Each time the sign changes, another photograph is made until the roll of twenty images is finished. The activity that transpires around the signs is presented in time with the pacing of the signage.

The installation of the five sequences together is intended to mimic the look of coded language such as text or Morse code. Each sequence is broken up into groupings of one, two, three or four and arranged in a formation that visually alludes to a paragraph of text. The sequences are presented in order as one would read text; left to right, top to bottom.

The number of images in each grouping is determined by the level of activity within the image/s and the visual impact/interest of the image as a single photograph. The strongest photographs are left as singles while the more banal ones are presented in small groups to emphasize the sequential pacing of the series. The single images become visual points of emphasis that add another layer of rhythm to the piece.

I will be making more of these sequences in 2010. What is shown here is one possible version that could change depending on new material and the size/shape of the installation space. The exact size of the prints may also change depending on space limitations and the total number of photographs.

Prints will be individually framed or mounted.
